The Archaeology Research and Training Centre at Baku State University (BSU) has launched a series of workshops to promote emerging areas of archaeological research, introduce innovative scientific methods, and strengthen young researchers’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

The first workshop, organised by the Centre’s Bioarchaeological Research Laboratory, focused on “Paleogenetic Analysis of Ancient Human Remains: Identifying Biological Relationships”.

Mahrusa Yusifli, a research fellow at the laboratory, provided an overview of the paleogenetic study of ancient human remains, including the extraction and analysis of ancient DNA and modern scientific methods for identifying biological relationships through genetic data.

She highlighted the importance of paleogenetic analysis in investigating the origins of ancient populations, genetic relationships, migration patterns, and the social structures of past communities. Integrating these methods into archaeological research offers new opportunities for more accurate scientific interpretations of evidence obtained from human remains and for reconstructing the demographic characteristics of ancient societies.

The workshop also covered paleogenetic research conducted through cooperation between BSU and the State Security Service. Participants noted that the application of modern molecular genetic methods in archaeology complements traditional archaeological and anthropological research, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of the biological and social history of past communities.
