Jewelry design and sculpture are two sister art forms that require a harmony of miniature delicacy and grand forms, breathing life into metal and stone. Rufus İsrafil oglu Mikayılov, a jeweler-designer and sculptor with three years of experience, shared with "innews media" how he unites these two directions in his work, the language of the materials, and his future goals.
- Hello, Rufat. You work as both a jeweler-designer and a sculptor. How has this three-year artistic journey transformed your inner world?
- Hello. These three years taught me how to speak the language of materials. Whether it is a small piece of jewelry or a large sculpture, both require giving soul to form. As my experience grew, my view on details changed, and my patience and precision became even sharper.
- Sculpture and jewelry making differ greatly in scale. How do these two fields complement each other?
- Sculpture helps me feel space, volume, and form on a broader scale. Jewelry making, on the other hand, demands that broad perspective be executed with microscopic precision. In other words, I apply jeweler's finesse when making a sculpture, and sculptural grandeur when crafting a piece of jewelry.
- Will we see you in larger future projects that synthesize jewelry design and sculpture?
- Absolutely. My primary goal is to fully merge these two arts to create a signature style and offer original author pieces bearing sculptural elements while preserving their individuality.
- Rufat, this year, sculptural forms, large silver details, and natural stones are coming to the fore in jewelry design. Given your background in sculpture, how do this year's jewelry trends align with your creative vision?
- You hit the nail on the head. This year's main trend features sculptural and architectural forms that blur the boundaries between art and jewelry. Simple, small ornaments are giving way to the concept of "wearable art."
My sculpture background allows me to infuse metal directly with volume and dynamics. In particular, this year's trending cuff bracelets, intricately shaped rings, and the use of matte/textured metals perfectly match my signature style. By combining microscopic jeweler's precision with sculptural volume, I don't just follow trends-I bring them to life in my own unique style.
