The latest guest of the “Diplomacy Hour” project, jointly organized by Baku State University (BSU), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), BSU Volunteers, and Diplomacy Volunteers, was Elmeddin Mehdiyev, Head of the MFA’s Department for the Middle East and Africa.

BSU Vice-Rector Alish Agamirzayev highlighted the university’s important role in training highly qualified specialists and noted its close cooperation with the MFA. He said that the “Diplomacy Hour” project aims to introduce students to Azerbaijani ambassadors serving abroad and professional diplomats working at the MFA.

The Vice-Rector noted that the Middle East and Africa are among the priorities of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy. Elmeddin Mehdiyev, one of the country’s career diplomats, is a graduate of BSU’s Faculty of International Relations and Economics. In addition to heading the MFA’s Department for the Middle East and Africa, he is a member of the Advisory Group of the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

Speaking to students, the diplomat noted that the importance of the Middle East and Africa in Azerbaijan’s foreign policy has been growing steadily. He highlighted Azerbaijan’s historically strong economic and trade ties with countries in the Middle East. Referring to the region’s historical and cultural significance, he noted that the Middle East is the birthplace of the world’s major monotheistic religions and ancient civilizations, while a significant share of global energy production is concentrated in the region.

According to Mehdiyev, Azerbaijan is interested in further developing bilateral and multilateral relations, as well as political, economic and cultural ties, with countries in the Middle East and Africa. He added that Azerbaijan also pursues a policy of mutual support and solidarity with these countries within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), and other international platforms.

The meeting continued with a question-and-answer session, during which the guest answered students’ questions about diplomacy, Azerbaijan’s foreign policy, and relations with countries in the Middle East and Africa.
